Urgent meeting called over harbour ferry bus parking plan By Sarla Donovan AN URGENT meeting is being sought with the Lyttelton Port Company about its proposal for the Diamond Harbour Ferry terminal. The Banks Peninsula Community Board has asked for the meeting after Bay Harbour News revealed two weeks ago the LPC’s decision to reduce bus parking spaces to one and not provide a pickup/drop-off zone. “I know there’s Christine a lot of anxiety Wilson about this from residents in Lyttelton and Diamond Harbour,” said board chairwoman Christine Wilson. “The board needs to know where the LPC is coming from – urgently – and we need confirmation from the port of what their position is.” Concerns about the changes were raised by Diamond Harbour Community Association chairman Richard Suggate at a board meeting on Monday. LPC is building a new staff car park next to the ferry terminal, resulting in only one bus able to use the terminal at a time – currently there is space for up to three. By Bridget Rutherford AN UPDATED report on whether coastal flooding and erosion information should be included on more than 20,000 property records is being finalised. City councillors and community board members are expected to be briefed on the Coastal Hazard Assessment for Christchurch and Banks Peninsula (2017) on October 17, before it goes to the city council on November 2. It follows a Darrell contentious Latham 2015 Tonkin & Taylor report which identified nearly 18,000 properties at risk of coastal inundation and 6000 that could be susceptible to erosion over the next 50 to 100 years. That information was added to the properties’ Land Information Memorandum reports. But a peer review by a panel of scientific experts last year urged the city council to remove the information and do more research because it could be “legally

unsound”. The notations were then tweaked. City council head of strategic policy Helen Beaumont said recommendations from the peer review of the 2015 report had been addressed in the 2017 report. A “rolling review” had been done by Deirdre Hart, who peer
reviewed the 2015 report, to make sure the 2017 report met those recommendations, she said. Ms Beaumont said it would be the best current information on coastal hazards, with a range of climate change scenarios for erosion and inundation. Once received by city councillors, a “long-term engagement
process” would begin, focusing on how to adapt to challenges facing the coastal communities, she said. Christchurch Coastal Residents United has been fighting to have the information removed from LIMs because it could devalue their properties and affect future insurance coverage. Member Darrell Latham said it unsuccessfully pushed to have more than one peer reviewer for the 2017 report. “We’ve missed an opportunity for a balanced review by having only one peer reviewer undertaking this work.” But Ms Beaumont said Dr Hart consulted with various members of the peer review panel to ensure her comments were consistent with the wider panel’s views. “Multiple reviewers were not required as Dr Hart was familiar with the scope and intent of the recommendations.” Ms Beaumont said in Southshore and South New Brighton, the city council would work with Regenerate Christchurch to engage on The Southshore and South New Brighton Regeneration Strategy.

In Brief COASTAL PATHWAY The Christchurch Coastal Pathway won’t be able to access New Zealand Transport Agency funding after the city council declined to include it as part of its major cycleway route programme. Due to the coastal pathway already having on-road cycle lanes, the city council decided it could not include the new pathway within the MCR programme, which would have allowed it to access NZTA funding for the Moncks Bay-Shag Rock section. Frenchfest will celebrate Akaroa’s Gallic By Sarla Donovan SACRE BLEU. Frenchfest is back – and it’s bigger and better than ever. To be held on October 6 to 8, a new addition this year will be the celebration of Maori culture at the Onuku Marae Whanau Fun Day. “Akaroa is very proud of its European and Maori heritage, and the celebration of Frenchfest is one way of paying homage to it,” said Margaret Moir, chairwoman of the Akaroa Heritage Festival Society. Festivities open with the Friday night street party – ‘Fête des Lumières’. With the waterfront closing to vehicles, people can spill out of restaurants and bars and enjoy a night of outdoor entertainment. On Saturday morning French Bay plays host to one of the most important parts of Frenchfest, the re-enactment of the sailing ship Comte de Paris’ 1840 landing after a marathon fivemonth journey from Rochefort, France. The theatrical re-enactment brings the first European settlement of Akaroa to life. A multicultural camp site will be set up on the beach with

By Sarla Donovan THE TWO community boards in the Bay Harbour News area have differing views over whether parking on kerbs, berms and footpaths should be allowed. It comes as the city council considers submissions on the proposed Traffic and Parking Bylaw 2017. The Banks Peninsula Community Board wants vehicles to be able to partially park over footpaths, kerbs and berms, while the Linwood-CentralHeathcote Community Board has asked only that the city council define what a verge is. Under the bylaw’s proposed changes, it would be illegal to park anywhere on a formed pathway, but not on a verge. In a submission on the proposed bylaw, the Banks Peninsula board said many Lyttelton homes were located in narrow streets with no off-street parking. The proposed restrictions would prevent some residents from parking near their homes, it said, and has asked the city council to amend the proposed
bylaw and allow vehicles to park partly over footpaths without fear of being ticketed. However, the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board, which also includes hilly areas such as Mt Pleasant, Redcliffs, Clifton and Richmond Hill, has not raised similar concerns for residents living in its ward. Last week, the Bay Harbour News reported Richmond Hill Rd resident Brian Anderson had twice been ticketed for parking on the footpath outside his home and so had his neighbour. Mr Anderson said he was surprised at the tickets, as he’d been parking over the footpath for more than 30 years and most other residents and visitors did the same. “It’s too narrow not to,” he said last week. “By parking clear of the footpath, the road is needlessly narrowed and obstructed, greatly increasing the risk of an accident.” City council parking and operations team leader Clive Morris said everyone in the country was prohibited from parking on a footpath under road user rules, “so every driver in the
country must abide by it.” The new bylaw would widen the city councils powers to ticket those parked on grass berms and other areas which didn’t currently fall within the legal definition of a footpath. Linwood-Central-Heathcote board chairwoman Sally Buck said while she had sympathy with the Banks Peninsula board, they wouldn’t be advocating for the bylaw to be changed. Ms Buck said nobody “goes looking” to ticket people like Mr Anderson. “It’s usually someone up there deciding they don’t want you to park there. Proposed changes to stock control bylaw criticised
By Sarla Donovan A PROPOSED new stock control bylaw is onerous and unnecessary. That’s the view of the Banks Peninsula Community Board, which has made a submission to the city council criticising several of the proposed changes. Among the proposed regulations they’re unhappy with is the requirement for pilot vehicles to accompany stock on roads. “Many Banks Peninsula farmers safely contain stock by walking in front and behind herds,” the submission notes. “(Given that) moving stock along or across roads has not been identified as a significant or frequently occurring traffic safety issue in the district . . . the proposed bylaw is too onerous for farmers, creating unnecessary cost and considerable cost.” The board also suggested requiring approval for roadside grazing would be counter-productive, as it kept the grass down without any cost to the city council. Tunnel closures for safety upgrade MOTORISTS CAN expect periodic night-time lane closures of the Lyttelton Tunnel between now and the end of next year. The closures are needed to allow work on a $28.7 million upgrade of the tunnel’s fire protection system. The New Zealand Transport Agency said for a few nights each month just one traffic lane in the tunnel will be open and on occasions both traffic lanes will need to be closed. Details about the lane closure dates are posted on the NZTA website, www.nzta.govt.nz The upgrade of Lyttelton tunnel’s fire protection system is the largest project undertaken at the tunnel since it opened more than 50 years ago.
It will see the tunnel fitted with a fire deluge system designed to control and contain a fire until emergency services reach the scene. Around 9km of pipe will be used for the deluge system, which is being installed in the exhaust and air duct corridors above the tunnel. The work will largely be carried out at night and during the early hours of the morning to keep disruptions to tunnel users to a minimum. Safety measures for hill cyclists By Sarla Donovan DYER’S PASS Rd cycle safety improvements will include sealing gravel shoulders and installing electronic signs alerting motorists that cyclists are near. The Banks Peninsula Community Board on Monday approved the safety measures, which are designed to minimise hazards for both uphill and downhill cyclists. Repairs to potholes, remarking edge lines to give cyclists more space, trimming vegetation and sweeping excess grit are among the proposed measures. Sealing gravel shoulders and parking areas will provide space for cyclists to pull out of the traffic lane and electronic warning signs will alert motorists to the presence of cyclists on blind corners or longer stretches of road where passing is difficult. Post and pole cushions designed for motorcyclists may also be installed on guardrail posts, to protect a cyclist who may have lost control. The measures are part of wider changes proposed for Dyers Pass Rd aimed at making the route safer. Proposed speed reduction measures and limits on overtaking will go out for public consultation later this year.

community hall and pool, which is expected to be completed by Christmas. Because the skate bowl would require resource consent, it was likely to be March next year before it and the pump track will be finished.
Dyson now one of country’s longest serving politicians By Sarla Donovan LABOUR MP Ruth Dyson increased her 2014 election night majority of 1865 by more than 5000 votes to retain the Port Hills electorate for a fourth term on Saturday. Her 19,391 votes put her well ahead of Nuk Korako, a National list MP, on 12,728 However, more people voted for National than Labour in the electorate. But Labour still had a big jump in its party vote from 2014, moving from 24 per cent to 38.9 per cent against National’s 41.3 per cent. Ms Dyson becomes one of Parliament’s longest serving MPs. Her 24 years in the Beehive puts her alongside other Parliamentary stalwarts Winston Peters, Bill English, Nick Smith, Trevor Mallard, David Carter and Damien O’Connor. Elected president of the Labour Party at just 31, she entered Parliament for the first time in 1993, winning the Lyttelton electorate against National’s David Carter. She said the 2017 campaign had been the most exciting she’d ever been involved in. “The level of interest, especially from young people, has just been great. I like it when people are passionate about their community and their country, wanting to improve things, and we’ve had all of that during this campaign,” she said.

The development of suburban shopping centres like Woolston, Redclliffs, Lyttelton and Sumner would be a local focus for her this term, along with helping constituents to resolve earthquake-related insurance claims. Port Hills residents will
continue to see Nuk Korako’s mobile office parked around the electorate, after he was returned at No 42 on the party list. He said the strength of National’s party vote in Christchurch wasn’t a surprise. “I thought it would be more,
on the basis of our record, particularly in Christchurch.” While he was saddened to see the demise of the Maori Party, there was now an opportunity to build National’s engagement with Maori through Kahurangi Blue, a National Party group focused on Maori policy issues, said Mr Korako. Meanwhile, Green MP Eugenie Sage, who is third on the list and also the party whip, returns to Parliament after the Greens garnered 5.9 per cent of the party vote. Ms Sage, who attracted 2429 electorate votes, was with party faithful at the Lyttelton Arts Factory on Saturday night. “We were optimistic we would get returned to Parliament, though it is bittersweet in terms of seeing caucus colleagues like Denise Roche, Barry Coates and Mojo Mathers no longer with us. We’ve got a substantially reduced team,” Ms Sage said. “But we’ve been this size before and championed a lot of issues and we’re looking now to see if we can get a coalition and change the Government.” It was “too soon” to speculate on whether she would put her hand up for the co-leader position vacated by Metiria Turei. Ms Sage plans to continue championing clean waterways and rivers and working out ways to deal with the effects of climate change.

If the council don’t want this done, either the road needs to be wider or yellow lines to disallow any parking needs to occur. Vandals hit playcentre By Sarla Donovan VANDALS HAVE again targeted the Diamond Habour Playcentre, damaging a new, $2000 shade sail and kicking a hole in the children’s boat slide. Playcentre president and treasurer Anna Blundell said she’d like to think the culprits weren’t local people, but they could be bored teenagers looking for something to do on the weekend. It was frustrating having to pick up after whoever it was, she said.

They’d had problems on and off with vandalism and rubbish left lying around. While there hadn’t been any problems over winter, with the weather starting to warm up, it had started “ramping up again,” she said.
“We’ve had this on so many Mondays – we often have to go in early because of beer bottles lying around. There’s even been a few condoms on a couple of occasions.” While the damage wasn’t bad enough to make an insurance claim, it was frustrating more than anything else. “Our wee kids get excited about going to playcentre and we have to say they can’t play today because there’s sharp pieces of perspex everywhere.” The incident has been reported to police.

Earlier in the year, I wrote about the principle of collaboration and its importance to our students as they prepare for the global world in which they will live their lives. This is because the global world requires effective interaction with others. IQ alone is not enough. Our Emotional Intelligence (EI) – also matters. I also discussed that we now know through neuro-science that IQ-smartness is not fixed but can grow. Effort makes us stronger. In schools this is sometimes called ‘growth mindsets’. Meet the Mayor Nineteen Linwood College students attended the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Award Ceremony with the Honourable Lianne Dalziel, Christchurch’s Mayor. This prestigious event was held at the Mayoral Office.
The Year 11 production, ‘Harbouring Ghosts’ was a fantastic, eerie performance. Through this, students explored the healing of past mistakes. It was then the Year 12/13 classes' turn to take the stage. They tackled an adaption of Hamlet, ‘Ophelia Thinks Harder’. This was an extremely challenging performance which students handled with finesse.
We congratulate these students on their efforts and again thank Chris Allan from the Joshua Foundation for his mentorship and tremendous commitment to Christchurch youth.
In 2016, twelve Linwood College students acted as extras in ‘The Changeover’, a movie filmed and set in Christchurch’s Eastern suburbs.
Based on a novel by Margaret Mahy and starring Timothy Spall and Lucy Lawless, this comes out in theatres on September 28. Get down and support our local talent.
Prom Night 2017 For many Seniors the 2017 ‘American Prom’ was the highlight of the year’s social calendar. Magic was in the air and everyone was dressed to the nines - dancing the night away with flashing tambourines and Mickey Mouse ears. It was truly a special occasion, full of smiles,
friendship and laughter and one which our students will never forget. Staff working at Twiggers said that it was a pleasure to be part of such an enjoyable occasion. They were extremely complimentary towards our students’ positive demeanor.

News Port ‘seagull’ leaves union legacy By Sarla Donovan ONE OF the last remaining men involved in the 1951 waterfront dispute, Ray Fergus, died on September 12, aged 90. Mr Fergus worked as a casual labourer or ‘seagull’ on the Lyttelton docks, and later became a ‘walking delegate’ who liaised with the port company on health and safety matters. Fellow wharfie Baden Norris, also 90, and now living in Sumner, remembers him as a straight-up man and a hard worker. Both men were interviewed for a 2002 television documentary on the lockout called 1951. They were 24 when, on February 15, 1951, the unionised wharfies were locked out after resolving to work only their contracted hours. The lockout continued for 151 days. Arguing that New Zealand’s export trade was under threat, the National Government declared a state of emergency. Troops were sent onto the Auckland and Wellington wharves to load and unload ships and draconian emergency regulations imposed rigid censorship, gave police sweeping powers of search and arrest and made it an offence for citizens to

assist strikers – even giving food to their children was outlawed. Mr Norris said he and Mr Fergus were both rank and file members during the dispute. “We all had various roles (such as) going and digging potatoes and onions from farmers that were friendly to us. He was a good guy, a worker. He could have moved up the ladder but he chose to stay within the union movement. He was a good workmate, and that’s the best accolade you could have.”
Mr Fergus went on to become national president of the Waterfront Workers Union from 1969-79 as well as a Lyttelton branch secretary and president. He was president of the Lyttelton Waterfront Workers Union during 1979 and 1980, and served on the executive for many years. Maritime Union Lyttelton branch secretary Gary Horan said he was a workmate to hundreds of watersiders during his career on the wharf.
“A lot of the conditions that present members enjoy are because of the hard work and battles Ray and members like him fought for over the years,” said Mr Horan. “He was an eloquent speaker and had a vast knowledge of the politics and legislation ruling our industrial relations at the time.” Mr Fergus was married for more than 60 years to June. The pair tied the knot at St Saviour’s Church, Sydenham, in 1953 and went on to have two children, Robyn and Mark and two grandchildren, Francis and Heather. Said Heather in the eulogy at her grandfather’s funeral on September 18: “Granddad tread with purpose the path that unfurled itself for him. He was whole of heart; wholehearted in his work, his life and his love.”
In Brief MUSEUM LAND SWAP The Lyttelton Historical Museum Society is a step closer to a new site after a city council hearing panel recommended land at 33-35 London St be gifted to the organisation. It aims to build a new museum on the former Lyttelton Service Centre site and has received strong support from the community. Panel member Alexandra Davis said it was a commonsense move which would help further Lyttelton’s development. The city council will decide whether to accept the panel’s recommendation early next month. SAILING CLASSES Last week we reported that learn to sail classes at the Christchurch Yacht Club started this week and were full. In fact, the club has scheduled two junior learn to sail (level one) three-day courses. The first will take place on October 13-15 and the second is scheduled for October 21-23. However, thanks to a unique shop in London Street, Lyttelton, the problem can be easily solved. Air, Sea & Land has a huge array of fascinating items based on that theme, and with a general ‘boy’s own adventure’ feel about it, too. Owners Malcolm and Anne Carne have been running their gift shop and picture framing business in the port township for 18 years, and 18 months ago, decided to “reinvent” themselves by focusing on merchandise that would appeal particularly to men – although as Malcolm points out, many women also find it fascinating. Items with a sea or maritime theme include a selection related to polar exploration (Antarctic explorers Scott and Shackleton were both based out of Lyttelton), compasses, and a replica diver’s helmet in brass and copper. The land theme is represented in die cast model cars, motorbikes, scooters and other vehicles, as well as items with a railway connection, while aviation-related items include books and a wide selection of framed
prints depicting wartime aircraft and many others. Other fascinating collectible items from days gone by include framed collections of original cigarette cards, which are at least 80 years old, while there is also a wide selection of greeting cards with illustrations from the 1930s and ’40s. Custom framing is the other aspect of the business, and Malcolm is a Guild Commended Framer, an English qualification for which he was trained in conservation framing. Our Lady Star of the Sea pupils trip up the mountain

Bruno Davies (right) was among the year 5-8 pupils from Our Lady Star of the Sea School in Sumner who visited Mt Hutt on their annual ski trip. The pupils go skiing and snowboarding every year for four years, which enables them to become quite proficient on the snow. The weather was amazing on the day and fun was had by all.

Message from the Catholic Diocese of Christchurch Our Diocese is proud of Marian College. The school is thriving at its inner-city campus location alongside the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Barbadoes Street. Marian College shows us clearly that the heart of a Catholic school lies not in its buildings, but in a strong, supportive community built around faith. Marian College belongs to the Catholic Kāhui Ako Community of Learning, one of our 13 schools in Christchurch. Each school has an affiliated parish and networks contributing to the Diocese. Alongside our Diocese earthquake rebuild and repair programme, our parishes have been offered the chance to focus on spiritual renewal as we wait for a new Bishop to be appointed. The process for the rebuild of Marian College’s campus will be a priority for our new Bishop, who will ultimately make the decision on Marian College’s permanent site. This decision will not be made in isolation however, there are many factors to consider and groups to consult with, given the changes in our communities since the earthquakes. The Diocese looks forward to keeping the community updated on progress. In the meantime, Marian College continues to achieve excellent results and to thrive. Feast Day Festivities One of the most anticipated events on the Marian College calendar is Feast Day – recognised every year to celebrate the Assumption of Mary. This year, Feast Day began with a whole school Mass, which included the blessing of the new music department, featuring practice spaces and a multipurpose room. Traditional Feast Day activities involve Marian College’s house groups coming together in Xavier Hall to compete in a talent quest and house group chant competition. Rivalry between the four Marian College houses – Brodie, Deans, Seymour and Takahe – is strong and overwhelmingly positive. Students have been known to rehearse their chants and performances for up to six weeks in advance, polishing their acts ready for competition. Each performance is judged and awarded house points which are tallied throughout the year. The house with the most points earned – for academic, sporting, cultural, service and cultural achievements – is awarded the annual Inter-House Shield at the end of year school prize giving.
Aiming for France
Football talent Rebecca Lake (Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Irakehu) could be heading to France next year to represent New Zealand and play in the 2018 U20 Women’s World Cup. The Year 13 Marian college student helped captain the New Zealand U19 Football team to victory in the Oceania Football Confederation championships in Auckland recently, securing the team’s spot in France, 2018. Rebecca captained the team twice over the five game campaign which saw the team win all their games convincingly. Rebecca is a member of the Football Ferns development squad and has played with Mainland Pride (the National Women’s regional team) for three years.
Judo medallist Congratulations to Ria Kney (Ngāti Kahungunu) who won a gold medal in the U52kg girls category at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Judo Tournament last term. She won all five of her fights in the one day tournament held at Lincoln High School. Ria also won gold in two categories at the Auckland International Judo Open tournament held three weeks later at ASB Stadium in Auckland. One of her fights lasted just ten seconds!
Wellbeing and service A priority for Marian College this year has been student and staff wellbeing. This year, Marian has introduced two new courses: Kia Maia and Mana Wahine. Kia Maia is a course for Year 9 students which focuses on wellbeing, character strengths, use of money, cyber safety and developing study and life skills. The Mana Wahine course aims to promote strong Marian women. Especially for year 12 students, the course teaches wellbeing, study techniques, life skills, careers, financial literacy and service. Marian College has a strong commitment to providing service to the community. Not only students, but staff members are also actively involved. Marian College staff members rolled up their sleeves recently, to spend an afternoon participating in a range of service activities including assisting at Christchurch City Mission and St Vincent de Paul, cleaning up a beach, gardening for the Beatitude sisters, making goods for Christchurch Hospital’s neo-natal unit and other children in need.
Southern Jam Marian College’s Jazz Band travelled to the Southern Jam Jazz Festival in Blenheim recently – taking part in the showcase and celebration of the South Island’s secondary school jazz bands. Marian College’s Jazz Band performed at eight public venues and took home a bronze award. Band director Frances Daly is a Marian old girl currently studying at Ara Jazz School. Frances inspired the Jazz Band to compose an original song ‘Dirty Window’, which won Best Original Song at this year’s Christchurch Jazz Festival.

Diamond Harbour pupils focus on the environment Year 3-5 teacher at Diamond Harbour School, Muriel Haines, reflects on a recent visit from Enviro Schools Canterbury Diamond Harbour School’s environment group, the Green Diamonds, and some of the school’s future problem-solvers recently welcomed Toni and Andrea from Enviro Schools Canterbury. The pupils sang the school waiata for their guests and then talked about what the school is doing to embed the five Enviro School principles.

Protecting waterways on the peninsula It was World Rivers Day on Sunday, which aims to celebrate and protect waterways around the globe. Banks Peninsula Water Management Zone Joint Committee chairwomen Paula Smith writes about how our local waterways are faring World Rivers Day is a good time to think about the state of our local rivers and streams. On Banks Peninsula, rivers are not big but we have lots of them. There are hundreds of separate streams and creeks draining every valley, taking water down to join the sea in every bay. Our waterways are typically short, steep and susceptible to contamination from phosphorous-rich sediment. So what condition are they in? Environment Canterbury regularly calculates a water quality index for selected Banks Peninsula streams. The index combines a number of measurements to provide an indicator of overall water quality.
In 2014-15, one of the 13 streams was assessed as good, nine were fair, and three were poor. Twenty three Banks Peninsula streams are assessed each year for ‘aquatic ecosystem health’. Some streams score very well, others less so. Results vary widely from year to year and there are lost of factors. So far it is not clear from the data whether the ecosystem health of Banks Peninsula’s streams overall is improving or declining. We may like to think that our Banks Peninsula rivers and streams are in pretty good shape but the evidence does not allow us to be complacent. What can be done to improve the situation? Since its first meeting six years ago, the Banks Peninsula zone committee has allocated more than $600,000 to 26 projects intended to maintain and improve water quality and freshwater biodiversity on Banks Peninsula.

Has it made a difference? We are not sure. Most of the funding has been used to fence stock out and plant natives on stream banks. Research elsewhere has shown fencing and riparian planting is an effective way to reduce contamination and enhance freshwater habitat. We assume it is working here
and that the money is well spent. Some streams are now fenced and planted ki uta ki tai, from the mountains to the sea, providing protection for the whole length of the stream. The zone committee is looking forward to receiving the most recent monitoring results for Banks Peninsula’s rivers

Premiership-winning Bays score team of the year By Gordon Findlater FERRYMEAD BAYS celebrated their successful season over the weekend, first collecting a number of accolades at the Mainland Football Awards on Friday, before holding their annual club awards on Saturday night.
GAFFER: Danny Halligan collected the coach of the year title at the Mainland Football Awards on Friday.
Bays took the biggest prize of the night at the Mainland awards, named men’s team of the year. The club became the first club to win five Mainland Premier League titles last month. They held off pre-season favourites Cashmere Technical by one point in a tight fought race for the title which went down to the final round of play. Bays were also beaten finalists in the English Cup. Coach Danny Halligan was rewarded for his role in guiding the premier league team to their most successful season in recent years. He was named coach of the year at both the Mainland and club awards.

National volunteer award for Sumner surf lifesaver SUMNER SURF lifesaver Kate Suter has won a national volunteer of the year award. Suter, 23, was recognised at the Surf Life Saving New Zealand annual Awards of Excellence in Auckland on Saturday. She has worked to promote the club to the community, attract new lifeguards and coordinate many critical incidents. One of those incidents included a major search when a car went into the AvonHeathcote Estuary, which claimed the life of Maureen Imrie in March. Last season, Suter completed hundreds of volunteer hours, including more than 45 hours

as a volunteer surf lifeguard. As head instructor at Sumner, she created training plans from surveys sent to members and carried out courses that qualified 24 new lifeguards, 10 inflatable rescue boat crews, five IRB drivers, four new instructors and a new examiner. Suter managed and competed in IRB competitions for Sumner. She is also a member of the local lifeguard committee and has taken the initiative to get more clubs training together. Sumner’s Tom Denman was also at the event in Auckland. He was a nominee for the lifeguard of the year award, after winning the Canterbury award in May.
